The game of Craps is much more than tossing dice and finding out if you’ve won. Before risking your real money on a roll of a dice, go through our one-stop guide to Craps and acquaint yourself with right Craps strategies and Craps bet types to take a step forward in the race for triumph.

Top Online Casinos for Playing Craps

How to Play Craps

The foremost thing you need to know before raising the stakes in Craps is that the game isn’t even half complex as the table looks, provided you have well-equipped yourself with the basics of the table. Craps table is designed in a way that players at both ends can play simultaneously.

Time to know the people at the table

Boxman - The Boss

Boxman - The Boss

Sitting right behind the middle of the table is the Boxman who supervises the game and handles & stashes all the cash. The boss guarantees a fair play during the online craps gambling game.

Dealer - The managers

Dealer - The managers

Placed on both sides of the boxman are dealers who manage all the bets for their half of the table. Their job description includes paying the winners and collecting money from losers.

Stickman - The dice manager

Stickman - The dice manager

The guy with a fancy elongated wooden stick is known as the Stickman. Placed right opposite to the boxman, he is the incharge of handing over dices to shooters. The player throwing the dice is known as a shooter.

Time to learn the layout of the table

"Pass Line" & "Don't Pass Line"/"Don't Pass Bar"

You can locate "Pass Line" all around the table and it is meant for the bettors who are in favour of the shooter. Bettors betting against the shooter, place their bet on "Don't Pass Line"- the less noticeable bar on the table.

"Come" and "Don't Come"

Similar to "Pass Line" and "Don't Pass Line", these marked areas on the table will be utilized later in the game.

"Field"

The section marked as "Field" embraces numbers 2,3,4,9,10,11,12. The area is meant for one-roll wager.

Big 6 and Big 8

On both the ends of the table, you will find boxes marked as Big 6 and Big 8. If you place a bet here and either a 6 or 8 turns up before a 7 then you win.

Quick Tips for Craps

Stay away from Big 6 and Big 8

Don’t let the word “Big” arouse fantasies of massive payouts. The bet placed on Big 6 and Big 8 pays even, i.e., on placing a flat bet of $5 you get $5 only if you win the big bet. Isn’t placing a place bet on number 6 or 8 is a better deal? The payout is 7:6 if you win.

Play at tables offering the highest odds

As aforementioned, placing the bet on Free Odds is the most lucrative gamble ever in the game of Craps. So choose your table wisely, my friend!

Place buy bets on number 4 & 10

Placing a buy bet on number 4 & 10 is lucrative than a place win bet on the same numbers. As aforementioned, the payout for a place win bet on 4 or 10 is 9:5, i.e., if you place a flat bet of $10 and win then you’ll earn $18 as for every $5 you earn $8. Now, let’s talk about the buy bet. The payout for the same is 2:1 and the commission payable equals to 5% on the betting amount, i.e., if you place a flat bet of $10 and you win then you’ll earn $20 minus $0.5 (5% commission on $10) which is equal to $19.5. Apparently the buy bet aids you earn $19 on $10 and the place bet aids you earn $18 for $10.

Avoid single roll bets

The house edge for single roll bets is higher than the multi roll bets. Therefore, play smart and avoid single roll bets.

How to Find the Best Craps Casino

Multiple factors influence the choice of playing online casino games whilst gambling. Amidst all the excitement and insanity, do not forget to assure the best of the following parameters when playing online craps:

Bonuses

The Minimum and Maximum Limit for Wagering

If you can bear the risk of high stakes then our gaming experts suggest to sign up for casinos offering higher maximum limit for wagering because the higher the amount, the more are the chances to win more.

Banking

Commission Payable

There are a couple of bets in the game of Craps which demand the bettor to pay a commission of 5%. Some casinos ask the bettor to pay commission only if they win and others do charge the commission on placing the bet. Having to pay a commission on only winning bets lower the house edge from 4% to 1.67%.

Traffic

High Odds

The higher the odds, the higher are the chances to win more. With higher odds, you get a chance to reap the most out of the amount wagered. Five odds is the bare minimum for all the casinos, but there are some casinos which offer up to 10 & 25 odds, too. Very rare do we find a casino offering 100 odds.

Apart from these factors, do not forget to follow our tips for choosing the best online casino.

Craps Game Rules

Know The Two Phases: The game of online craps is played in two phases - the Come Out Roll phase and the Point phase.

Come Out Roll Phase:

The initial stage of the Online Craps for real money is known as the Come Out Roll Phase. The first roll of the shooter or any roll before establishing a point is the Come Out Roll Phase. How to establish a point is what you ask? The moment the come out roll displays any of the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10; a point is said to be established. If the dealer’s button is “Off” then the table is on the come out roll phase and no pint has been established yet.

To win in the come out phase, roll either a 7 or 11. Alas, if any of the numbers 2, 3 and 12 rolls out then you are said to be ‘crap out’, my friend and a new shooter takes over. Bear in mind that the name of the game ‘Craps’ is the synonym for numbers 2, 3 and 12.

The Point Phase:

On numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 being rolled out; the dealer flips the button to the “On” side indicating that the point phase has begun.

To win in the point phase, the shooter needs to roll the point number (the number which led to the establishment of a point in the come out phase) before rolling out a seven. If number 7 rolls out then all the bettors on Pass Line lose and the bettors are said to be “seven out”. It is not mandatory to repeat the exact combination of the come-out roll. All you need to win is the sum equivalent to the point number.

Types of Bets

Pass Line Bet

he bettor of pass line wins when a 7 or 11 turns up on a Come Out Roll and loses if a 2, 3 or 12 rolls out. In the Point Phase, if the number 7 rolls out before the point number then the bettor loses. (Payout 1:1)

Don’t Pass Bet

This bet works in the reverse order of Pass Line Bet. You lose on rolling out of a 7 or 11 in the Come Out Roll Phase and win if a 2 or 3 rolls out. The rolling out of the number 12 is a push, i.e., it is a standoff. In the Point Phase, you win if the number 7 rolls out before the point number and you lose if the point number rolls out before the number 7. (Payout 1:1)

Bewildered? Fret? Finding yourself in no man’s land? Without sinking in any other emotion, read the below mentioned example and thank us later.

Come Bet:

The Come Bet is similar to the Pass Line Bet. The only key difference between the two bets is that the Pass Line Bet is made before the shooter establishes a point whereas the Come Bet is made after the shooter establishes a point. (Payout 1:1)

EXAMPLE: You opt for the Pass Line Bet at the commencement of a new game and the shooter rolls out the number 5 (which becomes your Point Number). Suppose multiple rolls go without rolling the number 7 or 5 then you can seek Come Bet’s help to add to the excitement quotient. Put a flat Come Bet of $5 in the Come Box and the very next roll is considered your second point number. Suppose the shooter rolls a 10 then along with 5, 10 also becomes a point number. 5 serves as a flat point number for the Pass Line Bet and 10 serves as a flat point number for the Come Bet. If a shooter rolls either of these then the bettor wins and if the shooter rolls out number 7 before then the bettor loses both the Pass Line Bet and the Come Bet.

Don’t Come Bet

The Don’t Come Bet works in the reverse manner of the Come Bet just like the Don’t Pass Bet works the opposite of the Pass Line Bet. Both Come Bet and Don’t Come Bet are a self-service bet. Read the example below to get some more clarity on the difference between Don’t Pass and Don’t Come Bet. (Payout 1:1)

EXAMPLE: You opt for the Don’t Pass Line Bet at the commencement of a new game and the shooter rolls out the number 5 (which becomes your Point Number). Suppose multiple rolls go without rolling the number 7 or 5 then you can seek Don’t Come Bet’s help to add to the thrill. Put a flat Don’t Come Bet of $5 in the Don’t Come Bar and the very next roll is considered your second point number. Suppose the shooter rolls a 10 then along with 5, 10 also becomes a point number. 5 serves as a flat point number for the Don’t Pass Line Bet and 10 serves as a flat point number for the Don’t Come Bet. If a shooter rolls a 7 then you win both the Don’t Pass Bet and the Don’t Come Bet. But, if the shooter rolls out number 10 before 7 then you lose the Don’t Come Bet, and if number 5 is rolled out before 7 then you lose the Don’t Pass Bet.

Odd Bets

An extension of the Pass Line Bet, the Don’t Pass Bet, the Come Bet and the Don’t Come Bet; the Odd Bets are the favourite of every smart gambler. The big advantage of the odd bet is that it has no house advantage or disadvantage. Thus, you can place or remove them anytime. For odd bets, the payout varies from point to point.

PAYOUTS FOR PASS LINE ODD BETS

POINT PAYOUT
4 or 10 2:1
5 or 9 3:2
6 or 8 6:5
PAYOUTS FOR DON’T PASS ODD BETS
POINT PAYOUT
4 or 10 1:2
5 or 9 3:2
6 or 8 6:5

There is no particular section in the table marked for the odd bets then where do you place it? Tickling your gray cells? Well, the Pass Line Odd Bet is placed behind the Pass Line in the open area of the table ( known as Apron). The Come Odd Bet is placed on the top of their flat bets and slightly offset. Of course, this is done by the dealer. The Don’t Pass Odds and Don’t Come Odds are placed next to their flat bets.

EXAMPLE: Suppose you place a pass line bet of $10 on number 6 in the Point Phase and the maximum Odds are 10X. You decide to place the full 10X odd bet by placing $100 ($10 pass line bet X 10 Odds) behind the line (Apron) and the shooter immediately rolls out a 6. Hurray, you just won $10 for the Pass Line Bet (as payout is 1:1) and $120 for your Pass Line Odd Bet (as payout is 6:5).

Big 6 and Big 8 Bet

If you place your bet on Big 6 or Big 8, then you win if the number 6 or 8 rolls out before the shooter throws number 7. (Payout 1:1)

Field Bets

A field bet needs to be placed on the section marked as “Field” in the table and the bet is placed before the rolling of a dice. You win if any of the numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12 turns up and you lose if 5, 6, 7 or 8 is rolled out. (Payout 1:1 on 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11; and Payout 2:1 on 2 & 12).

Place Win Bets

The Place Win Bet can be placed only in the Point Phase, i.e., when a point has been established after a come out roll. The Place Win Bet can be placed on any of the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10, and the bettor wins if the number chosen is rolled out before a 7. The payouts for Place Win Bets varies from number to number.

PAYOUTS FOR PLACE WIN
POINT PAYOUT
6 or 8 7:6
5 or 9 7:5
4 or 10 9:5

Place Lose Bets

A Place Lose Bet works in the reverse order of the Place Win Bet. These bets are placed on the same choice of numbers, i.e., 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10; but the bettor wins only if the number 7 is rolled out before the number chosen. The payouts for Place Lose Bets varies from number to number.

PAYOUTS FOR PLACE LOSE BETS
POINT PAYOUT
6 or 8 4:5
5 or 9 5:8
4 or 10 5:11

Buy Bets

Similar to the Place Win Bet, the key differences between a buy bet and a place bet are that the payouts are higher in buy bets and with the trade off the bettor has to pay a commission of 5%. The rules for commission payment varies from casino to casino. At some casinos the commission is payable when you place your stake and at others it’s payable only if you win. Once again, the payout varies from number to number.

PAYOUTS FOR BUY BETS
NUMBER CHOSEN PAYOUT
6 or 8 6:5
5 or 9 3:2
4 or 10 2:1

Lay Bets

A Lay Bet also comes with a 5% commission but it works exactly the opposite of a buy bet. Alike Place Lose Bet, for Lay Bet also you are betting on a 7 being rolled out before the number chosen. But, a bettor opts for lay bet over place lose bet because the payouts are higher and it may vary from number to number.

PAYOUTS FOR LAY BETS
NUMBER CHOSEN PAYOUT
6 or 8 5:6
5 or 9 2:3
4 or 10 1:2

Hardways Bets

A number is said to have been rolled hard way if it is rolled as a double. A hard 6, for example, is a double 3. All you need to do to win is roll the hard way before a 7. Sounds simple? But trust me, it ain’t. Nonetheless the bettors place a hardway bet because the payout is higher.

The middle of the table is marked with two 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s each on two dices. This is where you’ll place your bet on a hard 4, a hard 6, a hard 8 and a hard 10.

HARD NUMBER CHOSEN PAYOUT
4 or 10 7:1
6 or 8 9:1

Proposition Bets

Craps offers several types of proposition bets. These bets come with higher payouts than all other aforementioned bets but the house edge is higher. We recommend you to avoid these bets if you are not up for bigger risks.

Proposition Bets are settled on the next roll. Read the below mentioned examples of the Preposition Bets along with their payouts:

  • Any 7: Wins if a 7 is rolled next (Payout 4:1)
  • Any 11: Wins if a 11 is rolled next (Payout 15:1)
  • Any Craps: Wins if any 2, 3 or 12 is rolled next (Payout 7:1)
  • Ace Deuce: Wins if a 3 is rolled next (Payout 15:1)
  • Snake Eyes: Wins if a 2 is rolled next (Payout 30:1)
  • Boxcar: Wins if a 12 is rolled next (Payout 30:1)

Identifying an optimum strategy to play craps is pretty simple. Place the Don’t Pass and/or Don’t Come Bets and back it up with the maximum Odd Bets that your table offers. This is called “playing the dark side” as majority of the players bet the opposite way. If you do not intend to stand apart in the crowd then place the Pass Line and/or Come bet along with full odds.

To simplify things for you, we hereby reveal the top 5 best bets of Craps:

  • Buy Bet 4 or 10: The buy bet on a 4 or 10 aids you make more money than the place bet on the same numbers. The calculation is explained under the section ‘Quick Tips’.
  • Place Win 6 or 8: In Craps, 6s and 8s are the second most commonly rolled numbers after 7s with 5 ways to roll 6 & 8, and 6 ways to roll the number 7. The payout is 7:6 and the house edge is 1.52%.
  • Pass Line Bets and Come Bets: For the pass line or come bet, the shooter has the edge on the come out roll as there are 8 ways to win and 4 ways to lose. The overall house edge on the Pass Line Bet is 1.41%.
  • Don’t Pass and Don’t Come Bets: Very rare do bettors bet on Don’t Pass and Don’t Come Bets. So, chances of winning are more when you stand apart in the crowd. The house edge on Don’t Pass or Don’t Come bet is 1.36%.
  • Free Odds: The mathematical calculations of our gaming experts reveal that the single odds lower the house edge on two bets to 0.8%, double odds bring it down to 0.6%, 10X odds make it 0.2% and 10X odds reduce the house edge to 0.02%. The smartest gamble ever in the game of Craps would be placing the bets on the maximum odd offered by your Crap Table.

Pro Tip: Checkout the House Edge of every bet before gambling. The lower the house edge, the more is the probability to win.
